Troubles from Undissolved Ex-Doubles

From the fifth E.S. Instruction in Blavatsky Collected Writings XII, on doubles and ex-doubles, and printed from a circular headed Answers to Correspondence issued in London in October 1893 with the note that the letter from H.P.B. should be studied with great care. The question put to her is a practical one: how to discover the source of the "Will behind your consciousness" which sweeps the physical self out of the moorings of one's control — a frequent case, she says, with many persons.

Her answer involves what she calls the revelation of a great mystery — the discovery, very often, of the identity of one's own invisible foe, who seems to lead one into what is dangerous and inadvisable. She cannot tell all, but gives enough to put the correspondent on the right track: that the atomic quality of astral doubles is not uniform but varies immensely with the moral, spiritual and physical combination of the individual. Taking the same ego who was A fifteen hundred years ago and is now B in 1888, the double of A after death was either preponderatingly spiritual or preponderatingly terrestrial. In the first case it soon dissipates in Kama-Loka and disappears like smoke, having no Kama-Rupa of strong desires to cling to — the linga-sharira of the good man being like the morning mist. The second case is what the title refers to, and what can trouble a later incarnation.
