The organising claim is geometrical in the way much of this library is: the trinity of nature is the lock of magic, and the trinity of man is the master key to the wonders of nature. Around it are set the passages the compiler thought most worth having. One is about education and authority — that all who have a voice in the education of the masses should first know, and then teach, that the safest guides to human happiness and enlightenment are the writings on genuine science and theology that have descended from the remotest antiquity. Another is the passage most often quoted from the book: the world needs neither churches nor temples, because the real Temple of God is within every man, walled in by the impenetrable jungle of matter, and only the pure in heart see God and obey the behests of the Spirit of Truth. A third concerns the discipline required, holding that the spirit must keep the combativeness of educated reason in complete subjection until cold sophistry is vanquished. The drawing of the Triune Law governing universe and man is reproduced at that point. One section argues that magic cannot be mastered by Europeans as they then were, and it is worth knowing before opening the file that the reasoning is put in nineteenth-century racial terms and includes a racial slur — the substance of the argument is that dogmatic superstition, together with a self-aggrandising sense of cultural superiority and national destiny, would prevent a European from submitting himself to the practical tuition of a Copt, a Brahman or a Lama. The last section returns to method, insisting that book learning of magical formulae, unlit by spiritual intuition, is worth nothing at all.
