On Death and Recollection of Our Previous Lives

It is a companion to A Master of Wisdom on the Panoramic Vision at Death* in this same section, and the two share their central passage.

The shared passage is the one on the last moments: that no man dies insane or unconscious as some physiologists assert; that even a madman, or one in a fit of delirium tremens, enjoys perfect lucidity at the moment of death though unable to say so to those present; and that a man may often appear dead while, between the last throbbing of his heart and the moment the last spark of animal heat leaves the body, the brain still thinks and the Ego lives his whole life over again. The instruction drawn from it is given here in fuller form — to speak in whispers at a deathbed, and to keep quiet just after death has laid her clammy hand upon the body, lest the quiet ripple of thought be disturbed and the busy work of the past casting its reflection upon the veil of the future be hindered. The answers that follow extend the question of memory far beyond the deathbed. Collective recollection of our lives on earth is placed at the end of the seventh round, on the threshold of the long Nirvana awaiting us after we leave Globe Z. The exception is stated without softening: irretrievably bad must be the Ego that yields no mite from its fifth principle, and it has to be annihilated in the eighth sphere. And a reassurance is given for the ordinary case — that even the shells of good men, whose pages are not missing from the great book of lives, regain their remembrance and self-consciousness once the sixth and seventh principles, enriched with the essence of the fifth, have gone to their gestation period.
