Proposition 3: The Seven Creations of the Puranas

Thirty-two pages with a contents page of key concepts. Its cover title names the source — The Seven Creations of the Puranas — and two epigraphs set its terms. The first is from the materialist Ludwig Büchner, and it is a striking thing to open a theosophical file with: the whole past of the Earth is nothing but an unfolded present.

The second epigraph, from The Secret Doctrine, gives the numerical pattern the whole file traces: universal genesis starts from the one, breaks into three, then five, and finally culminates into seven, to return into four, three, and one. That arc — out from unity and back to it — is what the seven creations of the Purānas are read as describing, and it is the reason a Hindu cosmology is being set out in a section about the giving of mind to man: the seventh creation is the one in which mind appears. Büchner's line does more work than it first appears to, because it states in a materialist's words the claim the file wants to make in its own — that nothing was added from outside at any stage, and that what unfolds was always implicit. The body of the file takes the seven creations in order, with the Purānic names and their equivalents in the vocabulary used across this library, and it is the natural companion to "Proposition 3 — Creation in ten occult aphorisms" in the first batch of this section, which gives the same sequence in ten compressed statements rather than seven expounded ones.
