Proposition 3: Diagram Notes — a Blue Ray of Light

Fifteen pages, and the file says plainly what it is for: *these study notes, together with the diagram at the end, are the blueprint of and compass to the Third Proposition of the Secret Doctrine.* Anyone beginning this section could reasonably start here with the chart open beside them — the same arrangement as the Diagram Notes in the First Proposition series.

Its own title is A blue ray of light quickened the mind of animal man, which states the event the Third Proposition is about: the moment when a creature that had a body but no mind of its own received one. The notes are opened by the series editor and then work through the allegory in which that event is concealed. A blue ray of light is said to have incarnated in the Two Virgins Dolma, and under the legend of Padmapani — the lotus-bearer, Avalokiteshvara — a whole cosmological history is held to be hidden, so the section asks directly who Padmapani is in reality. Three shorter sections follow, and they turn the cosmology toward the reader. True life is described, in Plotinus's phrase, as consciousness's flight of the alone to the Alone. The question what is our highest duty? is put and answered. And the recurring formula of this library — how the Sons of Light clothed themselves in the fabric of Darkness — is explained here in its Third Proposition sense, as the descent of mind into an animal form rather than the descent of spirit into matter generally.
