The obstacle is named first, and plainly: carnal proclivities impede man's yearning for merging self in Self. The union the title speaks of is therefore not a metaphor for an ordinary marriage but its opposite — an inward union which the outward appetites obstruct. What follows is the more unusual section, and a reader should know it is there. It deals with what the file calls unnatural sexual unions between the living man and the beauteous beings of the elemental world — the incubus and succubus of mediaeval demonology, treated here as a real psychological phenomenon with a natural explanation. The explanation offered is medical rather than supernatural: such experiences are said to arise from the abnormal over-excitement of the nervous system and the animal passions, working through the unclean imagination of the sensitive person. That is characteristic of the whole library's approach to such material — the phenomenon is not denied, but it is referred to a cause in the person rather than to a visitor from outside.
