Karma is presented as the uncreated law of truth and justice governing life visible and invisible across the universe, with man's spiritual evolution named as the central tenet of occultism. The account of how the process begins is given in physical language: at the first flutter of renascent life the mutable radiance of the immutable darkness passes from inactivity into intense activity and begins its work through continuous differentiation and individualisation, propelled and ushered by karma — with the cosmic cycles subservient to the effects that activity produces. The arithmetic of it follows. Radiating from the rootless root-essence, the one cosmic atom becomes seven atoms on the plane of matter; each is transformed into a centre of energy radiating seven rays on the plane of spirit and seven creative forces in nature; and the spiritual septenary on the right hand and its material counterpart on the left, though they evolve in close embrace, remain separate until the end of the kalpa. Only two things are called objectively eternal — Akasha and Nirvana — said to be one in reality and illusory only when divided. The comparative sections are pointed. The visible cosmos consists of self-produced beings, creatures of karma; the true Buddhist denies the creation of patristic fancy and regards the anthropomorphic God as a gigantic shadow thrown on the void of space by the imagination of ignorant men. Advaita and Buddhist scholarship are called identical on the essential point, that every creature however small is an immortal portion of immortal matter and subject to karma. The closing division of labour is stated plainly: the analysis of man as a terrestrial animal may be left to science, but his inner, spiritual, psychic and moral nature may not.
