Presentation 2 — Cosmic Whirlpools

The shortest of the five presentations in this section, and the most tightly argued of them, although again the argument is made entirely by juxtaposition and not a word of commentary appears on any slide. Seven slides carry it: one title, five images and an end card.

The first image is a technical diagram rather than a photograph, and it is the key to the rest. It shows a vortex drawn in section, its narrow end labelled the throat and its flared end the mouth, with the paths of an electron and of a positive ion traced through it in opposite senses. The two slides that follow are computer-generated fractals — one a blue whirlpool spiralling inward through ever finer detail, the other a green spiral of the same construction — which make the same figure at a scale that has nothing to do with the laboratory. The last two are photographs of the Whirlpool Galaxy, first as a wide field and then closer, its arms and its small companion clearly shown. The sequence therefore runs from the smallest scale physics can measure to the largest that a telescope can photograph, using one form throughout, and it is left to the viewer to draw the conclusion.
