It opens with editorial notes, quick definitions and a note for students, then works through the subject in sequence, with drawings reproduced at intervals (the Hierarchy of Compassion, Our Fourth Planetary Round) and several tables, including a semi-exoteric constitution of man and the pivotal attributes of the first four root-races.

The epigraph sets the tone: a passage from a Private Commentary describing the real substance of the concealed sun as a nucleus of mother-substance, the heart and matrix of all living forces in our solar universe, the kernel from which all powers spread on their cyclic journeys and the focus in which they meet again in their seventh essence every eleventh year — closing on the instruction to laugh at any man who tells you he has seen the sun. From there the study runs the whole length of the doctrine. It begins with the septenary chains of worlds and the question of who the fifth- and sixth-rounders are, with the caution that a few drops of rain do not make the monsoon though they presage it. It follows the struggle of monadic consciousness through seven man-bearing planets, the Dhyani-Chohans who watch over each round and race, the reversal of the elements between rounds, and the progressive spiritualisation of the earth. A long central section deals with man's own making — that physical nature unaided failed to construct even a perfect animal, that the early worlds and cosmic beings were failures swallowed by time, and that the Solar Pitris endowed man with intellect only at the close of the third race. The later pages address the questions readers most often ask and sometimes refuse them: whether the adept of the fifth round can escape further earthly incarnations, and two places where the study simply records that no specific information is available. It closes with the numbers — the duration of each planetary round in this minor manvantara, of humanity on each planet, and of the human life-waves on Earth — and with the observation that the Jewish Kabbalists dwarfed the duration of each terrestrial round by six zeros.
