The argument is that gravity, as ordinarily understood, is an obsolete law in the starry heaven. Among materialists it is called the king of the all-potent imponderables; among students of the sacred science it is instead one of the attributes of differentiation, manifested as the law of attraction and repulsion between various states of matter. Much of the study is devoted to what Newton himself said, as against what was said in his name. It is argued that he did not use the word attraction of the mutual action of bodies in any physical sense — that to him attractions were impulses, and that he believed in some subtle spirit by whose force and action all movements of matter are determined. The evidence offered is an episode: when his disciple Roger Cotes wrote in the preface to the Principia that attraction was the cause of the system, Newton was the first to protest solemnly. What Newton conceived as God, the sole noumenon of all phenomena, is said to have been called more philosophically by ancient and modern occultists alike the Gods, or the creative fashioning forces — a position placed alongside Pythagoras, for whom the forces were spiritual entities independent of the planets and rulers of the sidereal heaven. A second historical claim runs through the middle of the study: that Newton derived his knowledge of gravitation from Jacob Böhme, with whom gravitation or attraction is the first property of nature, and that he owed his great discovery to having fathomed the spiritual thought of that seer in its mystic rendering. Alongside these runs the physical position of the file — that light, heat and electricity are affections rather than properties or qualities of matter, and that matter is the prerequisite and vehicle for the manifestation of intelligent forces on this plane.
