When the Neuter Becomes Positive

Two pages from the Miscellaneous Notes in Blavatsky Collected Writings volume XII, first published in Lucifer in February 1890. A passage from the Vicomte de Figuanière's article on the Ego and the Unmanifested Being is quoted first, and the reply, signed Editor, is a single dense paragraph.

Figuanière had argued that the indestructibility of Force resides in the ceaseless action of the Unmanifested, and that because Force is limited by its primordial modes no perfect equilibrium is ever verified. The reply restates the position as a triad: Harmony in motion, Inertia in motion, and Activity in motion — three in one and one in three, carefully distinguished from unmanifested action. It is then put a second way, as two positives and a neuter through which the dominion of one passes to the other, with the neuter acting meanwhile as the negative. The claim the file is named for follows from that: the negative as such is non-extant, and the neuter is as radically untrue as the negative, until the neuter in its turn becomes a positive — which it does as the phase of attraction called gravitation. Gravitation is therefore described as only one phase of a triple fact, namely latent will, the other two modes of attraction being manifested will, one prevailing in organic states, and the third dominant in what are called super-organic states. The reply ends by agreeing with Figuanière's own objection about equilibrium.
