Two pages built around a single statement of purpose and two supporting quotations, one biblical and one from Thomas à Kempis, with the Latin given in a footnote alongside the English.

The statement placed at the head defines real theosophy as unswerving devotion to Truth, manifested from within outwardly as brotherly love and sympathy with every living creature, whether human or animal — the inclusion of animals being deliberate and characteristic of this library. The first supporting passage, from the first epistle of John and the gospel of John, puts the same thing as a test that can be failed: if a man says he loves God and hates his brother, he is a liar, for he who does not love the brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen — followed by the commandment that he who loves God must love his brother also, and by the line that greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends. The second passage, from The Imitation of Christ, book III, applies the same principle to particular friendships rather than to mankind in general: that regard for a friend ought to be grounded in God and the friend beloved for God's sake, since without that friendship has no strength and no continuance, and no love is true and pure which is not knit by him.
