The sequence is addressed to the reader in the second person throughout, and proceeds by a series of injunctions rather than arguments. It opens on the invitation to all that labour and are heavy-laden, and tells the reader that as heir to the Kingdom of Heaven, rightfully his own in the long run, purity of mind and strong will shall carry him safely on. The first instruction is to cease wandering after the unreal, to free the mind from the baits that fetter the Divine Self to finite things, and to shut the ears to the siren voices that drag the mind in a thousand directions. Suffering is then treated as refining rather than punitive — as gold is refined by fire — with the observation that the sun withholds his rays neither from the holy Ganges nor from the foul cesspool. The central image is one of evaporation: when the ocean is drawn up by the hot sun it leaves its saltiness behind and sails skyward in buoyant clouds, and the pilgrim shorn of earthly impediments will find his flight easy and speedy. From there the argument turns to thought as the operative thing — to think is to be, thought is the father of deed, the troubles of life come by evil thoughts, and a single thought of the Highest brings their end near. The closing sections hold that nature's loving essence cannot be extinguished but only perverted, that no one pursuing his own way of life should wrong another, and that a fervent thought sent round for the well-being of humanity is worth more than all kingdoms.
