Exuberant Speculations on Cloud Formations

An unusual file in that the editor plainly does not agree with her contributor and prints him anyway, with notes. Part one is Blavatsky's introduction, whose complaint is about method rather than subject: that biblical phraseology is often used to ascribe to natural phenomena meanings which could have been more clearly conveyed and better explained by the symbols of the ancient Wisdom-Religion. She grants the underlying phenomenon readily — cloud formations in the shape of persons or things being an old and well-accredited fact in magic — while insisting that their interpretation by the beholder is wholly subjective, as much as when he contemplates the invisible universe.

Part two is Captain Wm. C. Eldon Serjeant's own readings of the heavenly formations, annotated throughout. Her corrections are the interest of the file: where he reads the Lion as the symbol of Wisdom, she notes that since it is impossible to single out one element of a Trinity, Wisdom must be remembered to be also Love and Truth; where he reads a figure as Queen Victoria, she replies that it is not Her Most Gracious Majesty who is meant but the unseen Victoria of whom the Queen is the supposed outward manifestation. She is generous about his conclusions in general — that great changes are approaching in the temporal and spiritual life of humanity, and that these presage better days and nobler ideas, have been reached by many minds pursuing different paths.
