Woe for the Living Dead

The last document in the section, and one of the longest: a 39-page compilation taking its title from the Voice of the Silence — that the Secret Path leads the Arhan to mental woe unspeakable, woe for the living Dead, and helpless pity for the men of Karmic sorrow, the fruit of Karma Sages dare not still. The opening position is stated flatly: the Divine Spirit never enters into the soul of living men, and the gods of the pagan, direct emanations of the First Cause, never were and never will be men, on our planet at least.

From that follows the doctrine the whole section has been building toward, and it is put without consolation: that neither human prayers nor the blood of another man will save us from individual destruction after death, unless we firmly link ourselves during terrestrial life with our own immortal spirit. Divine Mind and Animal Soul are both pre-existent, but the first is a distinct entity, an individualisation of Mahat, while the second is an unscient portion of an intelligent whole — the one radiating from without the Soul of the World, the other emanating within. The warning that closes it defines the living dead of the title: that when a man falls into love of self and love of the world and loses the divine love of God and of his neighbour, the higher principles which constitute the essential elements of his humanity perish, and he lives only on the natural plane of his faculties.
