Blavatsky's footnotes to an article by William Oxley on the apparent difference between Hierosophic and Theosophic teaching about rebirth, from The Theosophist of July 1883 and reprinted in Blavatsky Collected Writings IV. Only the paragraphs of Oxley's article that she annotated are printed here, following Boris de Zirkoff's editorial practice. The qualification she attaches to the phrase in the title is the point of the file: the Master Atom pertains only to human consciousness, being a relative and not an absolute term.

The distinction drawn between the two highest principles is unusually precise. The essence of the seventh principle in man belongs to the seventh state of matter, pure spirit; the sixth is not a centre of force like its spirit but a fluidic or rather ethereal atom. A table of the semi-exoteric constitution of man is included for reference. The second half restates the doctrine of the life-atoms that runs through this section: that for three thousand years the mummy goes on throwing off the life-atoms of the jiva, man's second principle, which from the hour of death enter the vortices of being and pass through every variety of organised life form — the passage that Khandalavala's question in Evolutionary transmigration of material particles was raised about.
