Blood Is the First Incarnation of the Universal Fluid

Blood is treated as the point where the universal fluid first becomes physical, and the anatomy is given in occult rather than medical terms. Its essence is Kama, permeated by Prana, which is in turn the vehicle of the Linga-sharira. The red cells are described as drops of electric fluid carrying Fohatic energy to the physical body; the white cells as oozing from the Linga-sharira, said to be curled in the spleen, and so as the Sweat-born of the Chhaya. Enriched by Prana, the white cells vitalise every part of the body with Kama — and when Kama leaves, the blood clots. The observation appended to that is characteristically concrete: but when lightning strikes, the blood does not clot.

The scale on which blood is placed runs from the sun downward: blood is the seventh and lowest principle of our body, the Sun the first and highest, and animal blood an individualised but fleeting state of the One Life. Its colours are read as a moral register — in its highest aspect sunlight-yellow, in its lowest red, the colour of black magic. The ritual material is the hardest: that in the ancient rites of initiation "Atonement" meant the Baptism of Blood, and that at the last moment of the supreme initiation either the hierophant or the newly born, whichever was the worthier, had to die, since two Adepts of equal power must not live.
