The Inundation of Atlantis Was Preparing for Ages

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky · Atlantean Realities Series · 4 pages

A short piece of unusual provenance. The manuscript of this fragment, in H.P. Blavatsky's own handwriting, is held in the Adyar Archives — two sheets written on both sides — and Boris de Zirkoff notes that some of what it contains runs parallel to her published answers to the inquiries prompted by Sinnett's Esoteric Buddhism. It survives among the Answers to Questions in the Collected Writings.

It addresses two objections. The first is whether there is some confusion in the letter, quoted in Esoteric Buddhism, describing the old Greeks and Romans as Atlanteans; the answer given is none at all, on the ground that Atlantean is a generic name rather than a specific one. The second is the destruction itself. No such nonsense was ever postulated, the fragment replies to a mischaracterisation, and then states the position the title carries: the cataclysm that nearly annihilated the Atlanteans was slowly preparing for ages, and other parts of the world were affected as it came. It is a correction rather than an exposition, but a clarifying one — the sinking of Atlantis is not, in this account, a single night's work.
