Typographical and Editorial Notes
Text documents are processed in Word 2003; charts and diagrams, in Visio
2003; slide presentations, in Power Point 2003. In order to preserve the
intended layout and diacritical marks, Word and Visio files have been
converted to Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). Readers for the latter
and the slide presentations (POT) can be freely obtained from the Internet.
The North American usage of double quotation marks and punctuation is
adopted throughout: commas and periods are kept inside quotation marks;
colons and semicolons, outside. However, since every selection is strictly
speaking a quotation, inverted commas are omitted throughout unless a
particular selection was a quotation in the first place.
Authorities and annotations are marked by superscripted Hindu-Arabic
numerals. References to frequently quoted works are abridged as indicated in
the “Compassion” book and other major works.
Side captions in bold function as subtitles and, when read sequentially, are
designed to impart the salient points of the entire compilation. Selections
for which no side captions were thought necessary are differentiated from
the editors’ text by a wider left margin.
The illustrations were selected by the editors of the present series.
All study notes are revised regularly, with latest version number and date
uploaded displayed in the footer.
